Mast Group Ltd. are looking to recruit a Laboratory Technician to join the QC Laboratory team based in Bootle – Atlantic house.

Mast Group Ltd. is a leading international manufacturer and supplier of medical diagnostics products for the diagnosis of infectious disease. Our products are used throughout the UK and worldwide. The job holder will an integral part of the team, ensuring development, evaluation and registration of products for diagnostic microbiology.

We require a Laboratory Technician to work alongside other experienced member of the team within a multi-disciplined environment.

THE ROLE

  • Accurately prepare culture media (agar and broth formulations) and simple reagent solutions (physiological saline etc.) to agreed schedules for use in research projects and day to day laboratory activities.
  • Maintain supplies of sterile consumables (pipette tips, loops, prepared culture media etc.) for day to day use. Within area of responsibility, contact suppliers (internal and external) to order consumable items, collecting and sorting deliveries of such material to the laboratory to reconcile deliveries against outstanding orders.
  • Ensure availability of pure cultures of routine organisms in a ready to use state, as defined by current protocols, and maintain accurate records of inventory in databases of micro-organisms stored in the ultra-low temperature freezer as cultures are used and replenished.
  • Wash, rinse, dry and return to allocated storage, all glassware and reusable containers etc. used for the preparation of dehydrated culture media, solutions and other laboratory reagents.
  • Ensure that the Laboratory areas are kept clean and tidy and that adherence to laboratory cleaning schedules and hygiene standards is maintained.
  • Download, review and file data from environmental monitoring equipment, and take appropriate action as defined in equipment procedures when out of specification results are observed.
  • Calibrate laboratory instrumentation at specified frequency intervals ensuring records of equipment maintenance and servicing schedules are maintained and equipment databases are updated accordingly as disposals and acquisitions of equipment occur. Recognise equipment problems and apply appropriate methods to identify causes and effect solutions - seeking advice of senior colleagues as appropriate.
  • Produce reliable and accurate records of results obtained and laboratory work undertaken in appropriate laboratory and log books according to Good Documentation Practice to facilitate data analysis and interpretation by senior laboratory staff.
  • Recognise problems and apply appropriate methods to identify causes and effect solutions seeking advice of senior colleagues as appropriate.
  • Identify and transport hazardous and contaminated waste to correct quarantine or disposal locations, disposing of contaminated waste by autoclaving promptly in accordance with current laboratory procedures and assisting senior staff to organise collection of hazardous chemical waste from the laboratory.

THE PERSON

  • Degree in Life Sciences or HNC Diploma in related discipline
  • Previous laboratory work experience
  • Proven ability to work to deadlines
  • Attention to detail is a must
  • Ability to work alone or as part of a team
  • Willingness to undertake training to improve skills

In addition to the specified duties the employee is expected to perform additional tasks when reasonably called upon to do so.
